The history and Origin of Drukpa Lineage

The Second Gyalwa Dokhampa Ngawang Kunga Tenphel (1639-1679)

The second Gyalwa Dokhampa, Kunga Tenphel, was born in 1639 in the Chamdo region of Kham, Tibet and was recognized at a young age as the second Gyalwa Dokhampa by Yongzin Kunga Khundrup. He was enthroned by the chief disciple of the previous Gyalwa Dokhampa at Tsogyal Retreat Center in Drakyab, Kham.

Kunga Tenphel received the complete teachings of the Drukpa Lineage from Yongzin Kunga Lhundrup of Dechen Choekhor Monastery. He also received teachings from Choegon Rinpoche Choekyi Gyamtso. Kunga Tenphel made numerous long retreats to practice the teachings he received as well as reciting billions of Tara mantras. He passed away at the age of 39 in 1678.
